‘Crime of ’73’ Predicted ‘New Normal’ of Currency Debasement

A rare sentiment of Keynes with which broad agreement can be found, and in our discovery of what became known as the Crime of ’73, distinction can be drawn between winning battles and winning the war. The ‘Crime of ‘73’ officialized the elimination of the bimetallic dollar standard of the U.S. Constitution. John Sherman, an Ohio Senator in 1895, summed up Main Street’s concerns nicely:
