President Tayyip Erdogan could be in office until 2029 if voters in today’s Turkish referendum give him the majority. Poll indications show a narrow lead but their reliability is questionable.
Considering Erdogan’s inflammatory rhetoric amidst the backdrop of the Dutch elections, including the ‘Nazi’ remarks and calls for Turkish citizens to genocide Europeans, a possible 10-12 year extension of Erdogan would not only be of concern to those in his own country, but to the European Union and especially fragile Middle East relations.
